We stock 90 x 90mm white primed redwood newels, chamfered on all four sides in three lengths or square edged in a 4500mm length, laminated oak newels with a square edge in six lengths from 1500mm to 4200mm, and half newels in both for fixing against a wall.

Choosing newel posts

Chamfered newels

90 x 90mm, chamfered on all four sides, in 1375mm, 1450mm and 2150mm lengths.

Laminated oak newels

90 x 90mm laminated oak with a square edge, in 1500, 2100, 2400, 3000, 3600 and 4200mm lengths. Oak half newels are 90 x 43.5 x 1500mm.

Half newels

White primed 90 x 45 x 965mm, chamfered on two sides, or square edged oak, for the end of a handrail where it meets a wall at the top or bottom of a flight.

Fixing a new newel

A loose newel makes the whole balustrade feel loose. The bottom newel should be bolted to the string and fixed down into the floor structure.

Frequently asked questions

What size newel post do I need?

Most staircases use a 90mm newel, which is the size we stock. Measure your existing newel if you are matching one.

Can I replace a newel post without replacing the stair?

Usually, yes. The old newel is cut off above the string and a new newel is jointed on. A joiner can tell you which method suits your stair.

What is a half newel?

A newel half the depth of a full one, fixed flat to a wall to take the end of a handrail. Ours are 90 x 45mm in white primed redwood and 90 x 43.5mm in oak.

Are newel caps included?

Caps are sold separately so you can choose the timber. See our newel caps.
