Choosing treads and risers
Pine treads
22 x 270 x 970mm with a nosing on the front edge and a groove on the underside for the riser. For a painted or carpeted stair.
MDF treads
22 x 270 x 1000mm, nosed and grooved. A smooth, stable board that paints well and suits a carpeted stair.
Solid oak treads
22 x 270 x 1000mm with a nosed front edge, for a natural oak finish on a new staircase or over a sound existing one.
Cutting to length
Each tread is cut down to the width between your strings, so measure every step on an older staircase before you order.
Frequently asked questions
How do I measure for replacement treads?
Measure the depth from the back of the step to the front of the riser below, then add the nosing projection, and measure the width between the strings. On an older staircase, measure every step.
Can I put oak treads on my existing staircase?
Usually, yes, provided the existing flight is sound. Check the thickness so the rise stays the same at the top and bottom step.
What does nosed and grooved mean?
The nosing is the rounded front edge that overhangs the riser below. The groove is cut in the underside to take the top of the riser, so the joint is tight and hidden.
Can I buy one tread?
Yes. Add as many as you need to your basket, pay online and collect.
