Choosing strings and panels

White primed strings

27 x 240mm redwood with a square edge, primed and ready for a top coat, in 3600mm and 4500mm lengths.

Non-primed strings

27 x 240mm redwood with a square edge in a 4500mm length, for staining or for priming yourself.

Wall and outer strings

The wall string is fixed against the wall and the outer string carries the balustrade. On a flight that is open on both sides, both strings are outer strings with a newel at each end.

Choosing a length

Measure along the pitch of the flight from the floor to the landing and add enough for the joints at each end. A 3600mm string suits most short flights and a 4500mm string a full storey.

Can I buy strings on their own?

Yes. Our white primed and non-primed redwood strings are priced in the shop, so you can pay online and collect from Ashton-under-Lyne.

What is the difference between a closed string and a cut string?

A closed string hides the ends of the treads and risers behind a straight top edge. A cut string is shaped to follow the steps so the tread ends show along the side.

Do strings need to meet the building regulations?

The strings set the rise and going, so they decide whether the flight meets Part K: a maximum rise of 220mm, a minimum going of 220mm and a pitch of no more than 42 degrees for a private stair.
