Quarter Turn Staircases, Made to Order

A quarter turn staircase turns 90 degrees on a landing, left or right. It suits a room where a straight flight would run too far, and it puts the landing where it is safest: part way up the stair.

What goes into a quarter turn staircase

Left or right hand

The turn can go either way, and the landing can sit low or high in the flight to suit your doorways and headroom.

A flat landing

A quarter landing gives a resting point and a safe place to turn, with a newel at the corner carrying both flights.

Balustrade on the open sides

Spindles or glass on the open sides, with wall handrails where the flight runs against a wall.

Softwood or oak

Made in softwood, oak, or a mix such as oak treads and handrail on a softwood flight.

Frequently asked questions

Where should the landing go on a quarter turn stair?

Where it suits the space. A low landing, three or four steps up, is common. The Staircase Builder lets you move the landing and see the result in 3D.

Is a quarter turn stair more expensive than a straight one?

A little, because of the landing, the extra newel and the second set of strings. It often saves space elsewhere in the room.

Do I need building regulations approval for a new staircase?

A new staircase must meet Part K of the building regulations. We design every flight to the Part K limits for rise, going and pitch.

Can you match my existing balustrade?

Send us photographs and sizes of the existing balustrade and we will tell you what we can match.
